It felt like 100 smaller and larger waterfalls all along the gorge! Simply a great natural spectacle 👍

Wildly romantic on the way in the Gauchaschschlucht

The path through the Gauchach Gorge is especially not recommended for people with even a slight fear of heights! I myself had no problem with that, but my hiking companion had to go beyond its limits. The path is sometimes very narrow, slippery and muddy, there are no steel "retaining fences" like in the Wutach Gorge. Absolute surefootedness, good physical condition and good shoes are a real MUST here! It becomes particularly problematic when a hiker comes towards you and you have to pass each other. I would classify the section as difficult depending on the weather conditions. Still a real highlight for me and highly recommended for advanced hikers (sticks are helpful !!); you are in a real jungle with a breathtaking view into the depths of the Gauchach!

One of several very narrow places. Can only be done with good shoes.

The narrow paths near the bank, often located under a protruding rock face, sometimes even going directly through the water, are the spice of a hiking tour through adventurously appearing canyons. Every step is taken anew, considered, and yet sometimes you end up splashing your shoes into the water. This way, the path never becomes boring, with increased hiking pleasure.

Visually the largest, most beautiful, covered bridge over the Wutach. At the mouth of the Gauchach. Ideal for sheltering when it rains. When the sun is shining, it's nice to rest in the spacious area around the mouth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the natural monuments around Stühlingen unique?

The natural monuments around Stühlingen are primarily characterized by the dramatic gorges that carve through the region, such as the Wutach Gorge and the Gauchach Gorge. These areas offer a glimpse into untouched nature, unique geological formations, and a wild, romantic, and sometimes 'jungle-like' environment with numerous waterfalls and diverse flora.

What are the most popular natural monuments for visitors in Stühlingen?

Among the most popular natural monuments are the Wutach Gorge, known for its impressive natural spectacle and powerful geological forces, and the Gauchach Gorge, which offers a more pristine and wild experience. Visitors also frequently enjoy the Kanadiersteg (Covered Bridge), a unique structure at the confluence of the Gauchach and Wutach rivers.

How challenging are the trails in the natural monuments around Stühlingen?

Many trails within the gorges, especially in the Gauchach Gorge and sections of the Wutach Gorge, can be challenging. Paths are often narrow, rocky, slippery, and muddy, sometimes requiring hikers to navigate over water-washed stones. Surefootedness, good physical condition, and appropriate footwear are highly recommended. Some sections, like the Narrow trail along the Gauchach, even have wire rope security for less sure-footed hikers.

Are there family-friendly options among Stühlingen's natural monuments?

While the gorges offer adventurous terrain, some areas might be more suitable for families with older children who are accustomed to hiking. The Kanadiersteg area, particularly the Gauchach estuary, is described as inviting for lingering and offers picturesque views, which could be a pleasant spot for families to pause and appreciate nature without undertaking a full gorge hike. For easier walks, consider exploring other guides for the region.

What kind of natural features can I expect to see in the gorges?

You can expect to see impressive canyons, a river flowing through the landscape, and numerous waterfalls, such as the striking Gauchach Waterfall. The gorges are also characterized by dense, 'jungle-like' forests and unique geological formations, including areas where the Wutach river can seep underground during drier months, only to reappear later.

Be prepared for muddy conditions, especially after rain, and consider bringing water and snacks as amenities might be limited within the gorges.

When is the best time to visit the natural monuments in Stühlingen?

The natural monuments are beautiful year-round, but the best time often depends on your preferred activity and weather conditions. Spring and autumn offer vibrant colors and cooler temperatures ideal for hiking. During summer, the gorges provide shade, but paths can still be wet.
