Tones of dead trees ley on this beach. It makes a great place for otherworldly pictures. Kids love to play on the sand between the trees. Look for the giant hermit crabs. But I would choose another beach to go swimming. There are lots of sharp oysters in the murky water.

The whole island can be circumnavigated by bike in one day. Very varied nature. Wide beaches on the east coast. Good bird watching possible. With a bit of luck you can watch dolphins from the beach.

Yes, the area is great for family outings. The terrain is mostly flat, making many trails accessible for all ages. A good option is the St. Simons Island Pier loop from Saint Simons, which is a pleasant walk. Another popular choice is the John Gilbert Nature Trail, known for being an easy, flat path perfect for a family stroll.
Many trails in Glynn County are pet-friendly, but some preserves have restrictions. The John Gilbert Nature Trail is a well-regarded spot where dogs are welcome. However, places like the Guale Preserve do not permit dogs, except for service animals. Always check the specific rules for the park or trail you plan to visit before you go.
The region is famous for its beautiful salt marshes. The Earth Day Nature Trail in Brunswick is a local favorite, featuring wooden boardwalks that take you directly over the marsh and tidal ponds, with an observation tower for panoramic views. For a more historical setting, the trails at Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site offer excellent overlooks of the former rice marshes.
Absolutely. Many hikes in Glynn County lead through the iconic maritime forests with their ancient live oaks and Spanish moss. Cannon's Point Preserve on St. Simons Island has over six miles of trails winding through this type of coastal forest. You can also experience a climax longleaf pine ecosystem on the Maritime-Pineland Woods Loop Trail at Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation.
The diverse habitats support a rich variety of wildlife. Along the coastal trails and boardwalks, you can spot numerous wading birds, especially at spots along the Colonial Coast Birding Trail. In the maritime forests, it's common to see gray squirrels and deer. If you're near the water, keep an eye out for dolphins.
Yes, there are several enjoyable loop trails. For a shorter walk, consider the Tidelands Nature Center loop from Ponte Vedra Beach. It's an easy loop that's perfect for a quick immersion in nature. Many of the trail systems on Jekyll Island and at state parks are also designed as loops.
It varies by location. Some nature trails, like the Earth Day Nature Trail, are typically free to access. However, parks and historic sites such as Jekyll Island and Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site usually require a vehicle entry fee or an admission fee to access the grounds and trail systems.
Thanks to a pleasant coastal climate, hiking is possible year-round. However, spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for longer hikes. Summers can be hot and humid, so early morning or late evening hikes are recommended. Winter is also a great time to explore, with fewer crowds and milder weather.
Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended, especially during the warmer months. Because the terrain can vary from paved paths to sandy beaches and natural forest floors, sturdy walking shoes are a good idea. It's also wise to bring insect repellent, particularly for trails near marshes, as well as sun protection like a hat and sunscreen.
While most trails are flat and easy, there are options for those seeking more distance. The Driftwood Beach – Georgia Sea Turtle Center loop from Jekyll Island is a demanding hike of nearly 14 miles that connects several of the island's key sights. It's a great way to spend a full day exploring the diverse landscapes of the coast.
Parking is available at most major trailheads and parks on St. Simons Island. For trails within Frederica Park, like the Alice Richards Botanical Trail, there are dedicated lots. Cannon's Point Preserve also has a designated parking area for visitors. For beach access trails, you can often find public parking, but it can fill up quickly on weekends.
Yes, the Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site offers a unique opportunity to hike through history. The trails wind through a former 19th-century rice plantation, leading past the historic home and offering views of the old rice fields. Additionally, the Wanderer Memory Trail on Jekyll Island commemorates the story of the last known slave ship to arrive in Georgia.
