Access to the Enschlucht Gorge. The Enschlucht Gorge is life-threatening!!! Bridges with missing and broken boards, broken road surfaces, extremely slippery, trees falling across... The warning at the entrance to the Enschlucht Gorge sounds like a mockery. Definitely use the alternative route.

If you're too tall, you'll have to walk through the water, so if the water level is higher, I'd make sure you wear the right shoes or take them off.

In my opinion, this is the most difficult section in the Gauchach. The trail climbs slightly, and there's a rocky section where you have to climb or descend sideways. Without surefootedness and a head for heights, it can be uncomfortable. The ground before and after it is also quite loose and slightly exposed. Dangerous in wet conditions.

I walked up the gorge in July 2025, one day after heavy rain. Since the wooden walkway was gone and parts of the path had broken out and were muddy (of course only where it was most dangerous), it was really tricky to walk. And every time you think it can't get any worse...but in the end it was great.

It's a great hiking trail... but be careful...it often goes down steeply and watch where you step

The Wutach region offers a selection of 10 dedicated waterfall hiking trails. These routes vary in length and difficulty, providing options for different preferences.
While there are no trails explicitly rated 'easy' in the guide, several 'moderate' routes are suitable for families with some hiking experience. For instance, the Gauchach Gorge – Gauchach Waterfall loop from Ewattingen is a moderate 4.6-mile (7.4 km) trail that takes about 2 hours 16 minutes to complete, offering beautiful waterfall views.
The Wutach waterfalls are beautiful year-round, but spring and autumn often offer the most dramatic views. In spring, snowmelt swells the rivers, making the cascades particularly powerful. Autumn brings vibrant foliage to the gorges, creating a stunning backdrop. Summer is also popular, though water levels might be lower. Winter hikes are possible but require appropriate gear due to potentially icy conditions.
Generally, dogs are welcome on trails in the Wutach region, but it's always advisable to keep them on a leash, especially in nature reserves or areas with wildlife. Some sections of the trails, particularly in the gorges, can be narrow or have steep drops, so ensure your dog is comfortable with varied terrain.
The Wutach region is characterized by deep gorges, limestone cliffs, and dense woodlands. You can expect varied terrain, including riverside paths, forest trails, and elevated sections with viewpoints. Some routes, like those through the Wutach Gorge, can be challenging with uneven surfaces and ascents.
Yes, many of the waterfall trails in Wutach are designed as circular routes. A popular option is the Gauchach Waterfall – Gauchach Gorge loop from Ewattingen, a moderate 6.7-mile (10.8 km) trail that allows you to experience the gorge and waterfall without retracing your steps.
Given the varied terrain and potential for wet conditions near waterfalls, sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip are essential. Layered clothing is recommended, as temperatures can change, especially within the gorges. A waterproof jacket, sufficient water, snacks, and a first-aid kit are also advisable. Trekking poles can be helpful on steeper or uneven sections.
Beyond the waterfalls themselves, the region boasts impressive natural features. You can explore the dramatic Wutach Gorge and Gauchach Gorge. The Rock Gallery (Wutach Gorge) – Tannegger Waterfall loop from Wutach, for example, takes you past unique geological formations and the Kanadiersteg, a covered bridge at the confluence of the Gauchach and Wutach rivers.
Absolutely. For experienced hikers seeking a challenge, the Wutach region offers several difficult routes. The Schleifenbach Waterfalls – Wutach resurgence loop from Wutach is a demanding 16.5-mile (26.6 km) trail that explores multiple waterfalls and the Wutach resurgence, typically taking over 7 hours to complete.
The waterfall trails in Wutach are highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.4 stars from over 2,500 reviews. Hikers frequently praise the stunning natural beauty of the gorges, the impressive waterfalls, and the well-maintained, albeit sometimes challenging, forest paths.
While many trails are popular, the extensive network means you can often find quieter sections, especially on longer routes or during off-peak times. Exploring trails that venture deeper into the gorges, such as parts of the Rock Gallery (Wutach Gorge) – Old Rümmele Footbridge loop from Ewattingen, might offer a more secluded experience.
While the Wutach and Gauchach rivers are beautiful, the strong currents, cold temperatures, and protected status of many areas within the gorges mean that wild swimming is generally not recommended or permitted directly at the waterfalls or in many parts of the river. Always observe local regulations and safety warnings.
