Keszthely is often known as the "Capital of Lake Balaton", and rightly so. While many places on the lake are purely holiday resorts, the town centre of Keszthely breathes real history and baroque elegance.

The route from Keszthely to Hévíz is one of the most popular and pleasant cycling routes on the western end of Lake Balaton. It connects the cultural "capital" of Balaton with the world-famous thermal lake. The connection is short, crisp, and excellently developed. It is ideal for a half-day excursion or as a relaxed connection between sightseeing and wellness.

Although it is often associated with the address Gyöngyvirág köz (a small passage/square in the center), it is officially located directly at the Majerik Hotel at the intersection with Erzsébet királyné útja. The church in Kossuth Lajos utca in Keszthely is one of the most important historical sights in the city and the entire Balaton region. It is the parish church of "Our Lady of Hungary" (Hungarian: Magyarok Nagyasszonya-plébániatemplom), located directly on the main square (Fő tér) at the end of the pedestrian zone (Kossuth Lajos utca). It is the oldest building in Keszthely. The church was built around 1386 by Count István Lackfi for the Franciscan order. Lackfi himself was buried in the church after his execution in 1397; his Gothic tomb is still visible there today.

It is the largest Buddhist sanctuary in Europe, which can be visited for free and was consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 1992. It stands in the middle of the forest, and hiking trails, such as the OKT or Horizont, pass nearby.
