Kaiserpark Krefeld

Highlight • Forest

The Kaiserpark is located in the so-called Hohenzollernviertel, which formerly belonged to Jentges' property in Krefeld-Bockum. This particularly beautiful district dates back to the initiative of Wilhelm Jentges between 1878 and 1884. Jentges was a city councilor, an unpaid deputy, a member of the provincial parliament and director of the Krefelder Sparkasse. He bought an area of approximately 280 hectares that he wanted to turn into a garden city. His heirs formed the Jentges'scher Grundgenossenschaft and created the conditions for the creation of a generously planned villa area between the city forest, Großhüttenpark, Vreed and Solbrüggenpark. The large properties allowed for stately private gardens, and the entire district was heavily greened and crisscrossed by avenue-like streets and spacious squares.

City gardener Noell created the Kaiserpark as a connection to the city forest. The elongated complex was divided by a double pond and a bridge. The original plan went further, but was not fully implemented. The facility covers an area of around 5 hectares. It was intended to be given a special design by planting various conifers. In addition, many decorative beds were created.

Since 1959, the ponds here have also been causing difficulties due to a lack of water. In 1964, the water level dropped so much that not only were they causing a plague of mosquitoes, but rats were also settling there. The connection to the groundwater has now been restored here.

Niepkuhlen Nature Reserve

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

The Nieper Kuhlen are a silted-up old river channel of the Rhine, which stretches as a swampy lowland from Krefeld over a number of meanders through the left Lower Rhine region to Vluyn.

Along the channel, in which a fen has formed almost along its entire length, a number of small and large ponds and lakes (mostly former peat pits) are lined up like a string of pearls, loosely connected by various streams and ditches. The Niepkuhlen range with its ecologically valuable wetlands forms one of the most important biotope systems in the Lower Rhine, and many sections are protected.

This landscape can be explored particularly well on the numerous trails, particularly by mountain bike.

From two banks on the way you can see the NSG Riethbenden.

"... biotope complex made up of water, forest, grassland and reed beds in the north of Krefeld (district of Verberg), in the north-east bordered by agricultural areas and a castle park, otherwise surrounded by the settlement area. The one in the southern to central part of the Niepkuhlen lowlands (old river channel) The area contains several species-rich still waters, including two large ponds as heavily anthropogenically altered old waters of the Rhine and a very shallow pond, which was created in recent years due to the flooding of grassland and rows of pollard willows contribute to an overall high level of structural diversity. The NSG is one of the most important in the urban area of Krefeld. Due to the abundance of structures mentioned above, despite the location close to the settlement and the associated disturbances, it exhibits a rich fauna and flora. a. for aquatic animals, including waterfowl and amphibians, swamp and reed brooders and dragonflies. In the waters with their well-developed vegetation zoning, especially underwater and floating leaf vegetation, there are plant species from the Red Lists such as water feather and frog bite. As part of the local biotope network axis of the Niepkuhlen lowlands, the NSG with its near-natural waters, deciduous forest stands and shrubs as well as the open grassland areas is an outstanding, networked link. The development goal is the optimization of a species and structure-rich complex of water, forest and reed biotopes ... "

Wilhelm Deuß was born on July 3rd, 1827 in Krefeld, the son of a baker and bartender at Schwanenmarkt.
The Deuss Temple was built in 1901. Today's 120-hectare city forest was donated to the city by the Krefeld silk manufacturer Wilhelm Deuss (1827 to 1911) - with the requirement to create a local recreation area. The Düsseldorf garden architect Fritz Rosorious then created a high-quality landscape garden, which the people of Krefeld call "Stadtwald" - although it is a beautiful park.

Krefeld Stadtwald Park

I rate the city forest here, not the gastronomy! The city forest is undoubtedly a beautiful destination. However, due to the crowds, relaxed cycling is not possible when the weather is nice. It's also definitely time to push. Of course, with mutual consideration, everything always works somehow. There were just too many free-roaming dogs for me (nothing against the dogs and their owners, but there are simply better places for cycling).

Here on the southwest shore of Lake Elfrath there is also a cafe ("Cafe am Elfrather See"), right next to the regatta course landing stage. Coffee and cake, as well as small meals, are available here.
