Reopened on April 24, 2024, after renovations and refurbishments. There are now separate pedestrian lanes alongside the road. In the evening, the bridge is illuminated with rainbow colors—haha, just kidding 😅—thankfully, they're the colors of the Italian flag 🇮🇹.

Hi, is it practicable or do we have to go down?

The Ciolo bridge is the perfect destination for those who love diving from great heights. The bridge connects the canyon and below is a beach. 40 meters high, there is a breathtaking panorama occasionally interrupted by the "splash" of those who dive. Near the bridge there are many caves including the Ciolo cave. The name “Ciolo” derives from the Salento word “Ciole”, to indicate the numerous magpies that nested along the coast.

Canale dei Fani is a karstic valley located between Pescoluse and Torre Pali. It is an ancient river bed, now dry, which was formed by the erosion of the limestone rock. The canal is rich in Mediterranean vegetation and historical remains, and is a suggestive and fascinating place, perfect for an excursion on foot or by mountain bike.

The Lecce region, part of Salento, is characterized by unique karstic geological formations rather than traditional grand canyons. You'll find impressive deep gorges, ravines known as 'gravine,' and stunning coastal inlets. These features are formed by the erosion of the local 'Pietra Leccese' limestone, creating a rugged and beautiful landscape, especially along the coastlines.
Among the most popular are the Ciolo Bridge, which spans a dramatic gorge offering panoramic views. For cave exploration, don't miss Cipolliane Cave with its huge natural cavities and historical traces, and Zinzulusa Cave, famous for its distinctive calcareous concretions on the rocky coast north of Castro Marina.
Yes, several trails allow you to explore these natural wonders. The Ciolo Gorge Trail offers breathtaking views. You can also explore the ancient riverbed of Canale dei Fani, which is great for hiking or mountain biking. Another option is the Canali di Castro Trail, a suggestive path crossing a gully near Castro Marina.
Access to Cipolliane Cave involves a steep, downhill path, but it is equipped with wooden protections. The Ciolo Bridge itself is easily accessible, and the cove below can be reached. The Ciolo Gorge Trail is considered an intermediate difficulty hike.
While some paths can be steep, many areas offer accessible viewpoints and shorter walks suitable for families. The general area around the Ciolo Bridge allows for enjoying the views and the cove. For cave visits, consider the accessibility information for each specific cave, as some may have challenging sections.
Near Otranto, you can visit the former Bauxite Quarry, which, while not a natural canyon, is often compared to one due to its striking appearance. It features an emerald green lake surrounded by high red rock walls, offering a visually stunning and unique landscape.
Many of these karstic formations hold historical significance. For instance, Cipolliane Cave contains traces left by ancient ancestors, including pebbles with engravings. The broader 'gravine' (ravines) throughout Apulia often host historical and artistic treasures, such as churches and ancient settlements carved into the rock, reflecting centuries of human interaction with the landscape.
The best time to visit is typically during the spring (April-June) and early autumn (September-October) when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities like hiking and exploring. Summers can be very hot, making strenuous activities less comfortable, though coastal areas offer relief.
The Lecce region offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can find excellent options for gravel biking, cycling, and mountain biking. Many routes explore the coastal areas and inland landscapes, providing opportunities to combine your visit with other sports.
Yes, the cove below the Ciolo Bridge is a popular spot for swimming and diving from surrounding rocks. Castro Marina, near Zinzulusa Cave, is also known for its beautiful inlets and clear waters, offering excellent swimming opportunities.
Parking is generally available near popular attractions like the Ciolo Bridge, though it can be limited during peak season. For sites like Cipolliane Cave, access might require parking further away and walking a trail.
'Gravine' are deep gorges or ravines that are a prominent feature of the Apulian karstic landscape, particularly in the southern part of Puglia. While the Lecce province has coastal gorges, some of the most impressive gravine, like Gravina di Laterza, are found in the provinces of Taranto and Bari. These offer rich biodiversity, historical sites, and tranquil natural landscapes.
Beyond the most famous spots, you can explore the Canale dei Fani, an ancient riverbed rich in Mediterranean vegetation and historical remains, offering a suggestive and fascinating place for excursions. Another less-traveled spot is the Hermit's Cave, which provides a more secluded experience.
