The canal was built to export coal, limestone, and lead from Derbyshire, iron from Chesterfield, and corn, deals, timber, groceries and general merchandise into Derbyshire. The stone for the Palace of Westminster was quarried in North Anston, Rotherham, and transported via the canal.

A nice gravel path alongside the canal, not difficult to ride but be aware of other users and give them warning of your approach.

Lowered into place on October 21st 2024 This magnificent structure is 38 metres long and weighs about 40 tons. It replaces a brick bridge on what was originally the Great Central Railway and creates a direct route between Staveley and the Trans Pennine Trail as part of the Chesterfield Canal Restoration
