Part of NCN route 2, this is a pleasant traffic-free section of cycling through Royal Victoria Country Park. It features a historic chapel perched on the shores of Southampton Water. The Chapel was once at the heart of the Royal Victoria Military Hospital. The hospital building was demolished in 1966 and now only the Chapel remains. There's a kiosk in the chapel selling a range of hot and cold drinks, snacks and ice creams.

Site of the old military hospital: the old chapel survives as a visitor centre (you can go up the tower), there are children's play areas, a miniature railway and lots of flat gentle walks. You have to pay to park the car but walkers and cyclists get in free.

The spellbinding ruins of Netley Abbey are the most complete surviving Cistercian monastery in southern England. The abbey was founded in 1239 as a house for monks of the austere Cistercian order. Monastic life at Netley Abbey came to an abrupt end in 1536 as a result of King Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries. This heralded a new phase for the abbey, however, when it was granted to Sir William Paulet, who created a fashionable Tudor courtyard house. The abbey is free to enter.
