July 17, 2025, The Scrubs

The Saffron Trail threads through The Scrubs as a tree-lined path. This is actually a byway so look out for bikes, horses and even motor vehicles.

September 1, 2023, Hockley Woods

Covering over 130 hectares, Hockley Woods are the largest remaining area of the wild wood, which covered Essex after the Ice Age 10,000 years ago. A mixture of woodland paths and trails give a varied terrain to run. Lots of wildlife, a mixture of trees and a new car park. (Small parking charge applies)

September 1, 2023, Pound Woods

Within Pound woods, you can find well-preserved instances of medieval wood banks, alongside numerous ponds and serene dells scattered throughout the forest. A perfect place for a run anytime of year, although some pathways can be muddy. Come here at the right time, and it promises a breathtaking spectacle of bluebells adorning the forest floor, while your ears may catch the familiar drumming rhythm of the great spotted woodpecker.

Thursday bimble Posted on 27 June, 2020 by Tony Every so often I like to take off on my gravel bike with no destination or route planned. Average speed doesn’t matter. With the strange, sometimes stressful, daily pandemic world we live in, that can be a great relief. It is all about riding for the love of it. Just take off and see where I end up. This ride was a bit of a cheat though as I had discovered part of it last week, but there was still lots of new discoveries to be made. I find it interesting that, having ridden in the same area for many years, there are always new routes to find. And that “oh so that’s where that just took me” surprise. Of note on this ride was the trails through Belfairs Wood and then discovering Pound Wood. I was out riding early in the morning and only encountered two other people. If you fancy doing this, then I would recommend doing the same as I could imagine it becoming crowded later in the day.
