In the village centre stands the lower jaw of a Blue Whale that was shot in the Southern Ocean on 6 March 1950. This whale jaw reminds Schiermonnikoog of the whaling with the mother ship Willem Barentsz, to which several islanders contributed in the post-war years. Captain and expedition leader K. Visser was one of them and donated the whale jaw to Schiermonnikoog.
