A former gunpowder magazine built as part of Copenhagen’s defensive system along the Vestvolden. Its thick earth-covered walls were designed to contain accidental explosions and protect nearby troops. Today the building stands as a quiet historical remnant of the city’s fortifications, surrounded by green embankments and woodland paths.

Everything is here: caponiers, firing positions, a military bridge (to allow troops to launch attacks against the enemy on the other side of the water...). As is often the case along the Western Front, the fortifications are open, and you can go inside. The "Vestvolden" fortress wall was built in the 19th century after the lost war against Prussia/Germany to protect the capital. At approximately 14 kilometers in length, the fortress was the largest construction project in Danish history before the construction of the Great Belt Bridge. During World War I, 50,000 soldiers served at "Vestvolden." Fortunately, the kingdom was able to stay out of the war itself. Denmark's involvement in the war consisted of trading with the warring parties, supplying horses to the Germans and ham to the British. The development of military technology rendered Vestvolden obsolete. The fortress wall was decommissioned in 1920, later designated a protected monument, and between 2006 and 2014, it was thoroughly restored through a Relandia project. Today, it is a 14-kilometer-long and 100-meter-wide recreational area that stretches through the capital region and has many interesting spots worth visiting. Further information: www.vestvolden.dk
