It's very interesting to look at the flotsam and jetsam, such as anchors, fishing nets, and ship's propellers, and imagine the story behind them. The flotsam and jetsam are located near the large restaurant on Kustweg.

From the harbour, various mudflat hikes also depart to Schiermonnikoog. We went on a trip with the Wadlas organisation and it was an incredible experience. Even worth repeating. https://youtu.be/3UL1_3tsYEs

In the port of Lauwersoog you will find Waddenpavijoen De Noorman. The spacious terrace with a view of the Wadden Sea, Schiermonnikoog, the fishing harbor and the harbor mouth really gives you the feeling of being at the sea. Here they serve fresh fish dishes such as samphire, oyster, and fresh fish from the fishermen in the port. They also use local products from the Wadden Islands and the region. Please note: The restaurant will be taking a sabbatical in the winter of 2023/2024. Check the website for the opening date in 2024: https://www.waddenpaviljoendenoorman.nl/

The harbor should be part of every hike or bike tour. Many fishing boats and therefore a good number of fish restaurants offer a good selection. It's worth taking a break with Kibbeling & Frites. Nice harbor that offers more than just the ferry to Schier.

A beautiful, well-kept mill in which the tourist office is housed.

Port Lauwersoog is primarily a fishing port. The port was created when the Lauwersmeer was closed in 1969. The former working island of Rijkswaterstaat was spontaneously used by the fishery as a home port, close to the fishing grounds. There is also limited recreation and industry in the port, but the majority of activities arise from or are related to fishing. Both the fishing industry and the port itself are under pressure. More and more fishing grounds are being closed for wind farms. Especially where the bottom is less deep and fishing has been going on for hundreds of years, fishing grounds are increasingly closed off for the construction of wind farms. Port of Lauwersoog is a staunch supporter of the sustainable generation of energy, but also sees that fishing grounds are declining sharply. The port itself is under pressure because ports of this size are hardly able to survive without government support. The Port of Lauwersoog is certainly in favor of wind farms, but with the maintenance of sufficient fishing grounds and attention to the “right of way” or “customary law” of fishing. Port Lauwersoog is situated in a unique location, between the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea and Lauwersmeer National Park.
