In the 1960s, a scale model of the Maasvlakte, the large port and industrial area near Rotterdam, was built in the Waterloopbos. Engineers tested here how the artificial expansion of the port could best be designed to provide safe access for shipping. Currents, tides, and the operation of breakwaters were simulated on a small scale. The model provided valuable insights for the construction of the first Maasvlakte, which later grew into one of the largest port areas in the world. Today, the concrete remains lie still among trees, water, and moss, as a tangible reminder of the time when world-class projects were worked on here.

The Waterloopbos is a unique area where nature and history converge. This former open-air laboratory houses dozens of scale models of world-famous harbors, dams, and locks. Nature has since taken over much of the landscape, allowing you to walk among trees, water, and the ruins of test models. A unique combination of cultural engineering and natureβdefinitely recommended for hikers and curious explorers! ππ³
