Mělník is a castle rebuilt into a chateau on a hill above the Elbe River. It thus forms one of the dominant features of the town of Mělník. Its preserved form is the result of Baroque reconstruction and later modifications. It is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The larger-than-life statue stands on a prismatic, slightly conical pedestal. The monarch wears a flowing gown, a cloak over his shoulders, and holds a charter and a vine in his hands – the statue depicts Charles IV as a great patron of Czech viticulture. The work dates from 1840 and was commissioned by the knight Jan Norbert Gemerich von Neuberk and the sculptor Josef Maxa. In 1879, the statue was moved from Neuberk Castle to the former civic school, and in 1929 to its current location. From this site, there is a beautiful view of the confluence of the Elbe and Vltava rivers, and in good weather, Mount Říp is clearly visible. Source: Vladimir Pecha
