Next to the Nave de Santo António, the Covão do Ferro or Padre Alfredo dam, inaugurated in 1956, uses a glacial cirque and collects water from the Alforfa stream. It was commissioned by Father Alfredo to supply electricity to the wool industry in Unhais da Serra. Unhais da Serra can be seen in the background.

Located within the Planalto Superior biogenetic reserve, the Rossim Valley is a unique location of great scientific, environmental, and scenic value that deserves to be protected and enhanced. Although it is an artificial lake, over time, conditions have been created that have transformed this area into an excellent leisure and recreation area that attracts countless tourists. The Vale do Rossim recreation center is located at an average altitude of 1,437 meters. Before the dam was built, it was one of the best high-altitude pastures in the municipality of Gouveia. The area has almost always been frequented by transhumance herds, flocks that gathered here from São João to the Sr. do Calvário festivities in August.

A beautiful hike through the valley (depending on your starting point, the ascent or descent will be more pronounced). Start as early as possible, while the sun is still behind the mountain range. Online tickets only (no payment on site). Take a screenshot of your ticket (QR code). This will be scanned when exiting or re-entering (if you want to go back). Bring plenty of water. The sun will come out around 10:00 a.m. (I hiked it in October). Parking is available right next to the upper starting point. The lower trailhead is about 500 meters away (coming from Chãos, turn left before the dam).

At over 1,400 meters above sea level, the Rossim Valley Reservoir is a haven of granite, pine trees, and crystal-clear waters in the heart of the Serra da Estrela Mountains. It's the perfect setting for strolls, summer swims, and admiring nature in all its splendor, one of Portugal's highest jewels.

The Serra da Estrela Natural Park is something truly special. This 1,000-square-kilometer park, spread across six municipalities, was the first and currently the largest protected natural park in Portugal. It is home to the highest point on the Portuguese mainland, the country's only ski slope, the source of two important rivers, and a fascinating, alpine-like landscape formed by glaciers.

At exactly 1993 meters above sea level, Torre is the highest point in mainland Portugal, where the only ski resort is located. The landscape on the upper plateau of the Serra da Estrela is like a sprinkling of granite rocks over low scrub and patches of snow and ice, which the sun threatens to melt soon in the summer and which always returns the following winter. In winter, it sometimes becomes inaccessible.

I did it and I recommend it. A very pleasant route, with spectacular views. A suspension bridge creates some adrenaline for those less experienced in these walks.😂

Gouveia is a picturesque Portuguese town and municipality located in the district of Guarda, on the northern edge of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. With an elevated position that provides it with a mountain climate and picturesque views, Gouveia is considered one of the "gateways" to the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal. The town stands out for its rich historical and architectural heritage, with a charming old town characterized by narrow cobbled streets, traditional houses and monuments such as the Mother Church of São Pedro and the Paços do Concelho (Town Hall). Gouveia is also renowned for the production of the famous Queijo Serra da Estrela, a DOP sheep's cheese, and for its tradition of the Cão da Serra da Estrela dog breed. Its proximity to the Natural Park makes it an excellent base for exploring the natural beauty of the Serra.
