The region around Nuglar/St. Pantaleon once had 20,000 cherry trees. Today, there are still half that many. But 10,000 is still quite a lot. You can get a small impression of this from this location. The view of the opposite hill with the cherry trees blooming between April and May is... indescribable. 🥰

Since 1926, the monastery church has borne the papal title of honor of a Basilica minor. Originally built in the late Gothic style, the interior was redesigned several times and furnished and painted in the Neo-Baroque style between 1900 and 1934. The mighty high altar at the end of the choir, a gift from the French King Louis XIV, was consecrated in 1680.

Referring to a quote from the immensely popular Holy Father, Pope John XXIII (Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, 1881-1968), "Every day is a good day to be born and a good day to die," Christiane Völkel offered a brief reflection that I would like to share with those who view this small sacred monument: "This thought makes it clear that we Christians can have a different perspective on life than those who lack this dimension of hope for the fulfillment of life. Those who succeed in entrusting their mortality to God can escape the fear of death."

The History of the Hörtenberg Cross The history of the Hörtenberg Cross dates back to 1954, when Giancarlo Podini, founder of the Podini family and a visionary entrepreneur, decided to create this impressive structure. The inspiration for the cross came from his childhood memories, when the surrounding mountains were often lit up with glowing signs celebrating special events or significant moments for the local community. Determined to revive that ancient tradition, Giancarlo Podini commissioned the construction of the Hörtenberg Cross, using a sturdy metal lattice structure capable of withstanding the elements and the test of time. Since then, every night, the cross lights up, casting a reassuring glow over the city of Bolzano and becoming a point of reference for residents and visitors alike. An Immersive Experience: The Walk to the Hörtenberg Cross Reaching the Hörtenberg Cross is an experience that combines history, nature, and adventure. You can choose a pleasant panoramic wa
