The church was built between 1681 and 1685, according to the plans of the Italian architect Antonio Petrini, on the foundations of a previous church and a pagan sacrificial site. The interior of the church was decorated in 1692, with particular attention being given to the ceiling painting, which is a listed building. The residents of the town acquired a new organ in 1708, which was completely replaced in 1875 due to errors during repairs. Source: Kirche - Worbis.de

The first church dates back to the late Middle Ages or 1617, in part. A tower was added to it in 1694. This was followed by an extensive reconstruction, which was partly accompanied by a new building. In 1913/1914, the extension with a transept, choir and sacristy was added. Renovations took place in 1962 and 1988. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the roof and tower were extensively renovated in 2005, the church roof was partially renovated in 2011, the church interior was fumigated in 2013 and the church interior and roof were renovated in 2015/2016. Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, to whom the church in Worbis is dedicated, is - alongside Saint Martin - one of the most popular saints of all. Pretty much every child in Germany - and far beyond - knows his memorial day, December 6th. On the eve of this day, children used to put their shoes or boots - which had of course been carefully polished - in front of the door so that Saint Nicholas could fill them with gifts during the night. In more agricultural areas, it was also customary for children to put out a small gift of food for the donkey, Saint Nicholas's mount (according to another tradition, it was a white horse).
