The context is the Siege of Stralsund in 1807 (part of the Napoleonic Wars / War of the Fourth Coalition or the Franco-Swedish War). French and allied troops (including under Marshal Mortier and later Brune) besieged the Swedish-held fortress of Stralsund in Swedish Pomerania. The castle in Dargun was located in the hinterland and was used for the supply of the wounded and sick. Many soldiers died there from wounds, diseases, or the hygienic conditions of the time.

It was located on the Klenzer Mühlenbach (also Klenzer Mühlbach), a stream in the nature park Flusslandschaft Peenetal. Today, the site is marked as a historical/archaeological site; the mill itself no longer exists. The stream bed has recently been lovingly redesigned with funding and invites you to linger.
