In the GDR, the most important retail companies were the Handelsorganisation (HO) and Konsum. HO was a state-owned enterprise, while Konsum was a cooperatively organized chain. Both had a wide network of outlets, including department stores, grocery stores, and specialty shops. Konsum was particularly active in rural areas and was designed to ensure the supply of the local population. Members of the consumer cooperatives received discounts on their purchases, which were issued as consumer vouchers and paid out at the end of the year.

You need to be pretty fit to get up here by bike, but it's worth it.

Trostadt Monastery and the present-day town of Trostadt are located on the upper reaches of the Werra, about seven kilometers west of the district town of Hildburghausen. The town is located on the western edge of the valley, already in a flood-prone location, barely two meters above the Werra floodplain. Some of the buildings in the town date back to the time of the former monastery, but only a few remains of the sacred buildings remain. Source:https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kloster_Trostadt

The Counts of Henneberg became supporters of the Premonstratensian Order in Thuringia in 1130 and in 1131, thanks to generous donations, enabled the founding of a double monastery in the town of Veßra. In return, Veßra Monastery was designated as the counts' private monastery and from 1182 onwards was also used as their burial place. Veßra Monastery was consecrated in 1138 by the Bamberg bishop Otto II. Source:https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kloster_Trostadt

The Werra Valley with the Werra stretches in the south between the Rhön and the Thuringian Forest and then runs along the edge of the northern Hessian mountains until it meets the Fulda. At this point you cross the Werra and shortly afterwards reach Eisfeld. The Werra rises at its sources in the Thuringian Forest near the towns of Fehrenbach and Siegmundsburg and then flows for around 300 km to Hann. Münden, where it flows into the Weser with the Fulda. So here in Hildburghausen you are relatively at the beginning of the Werra Valley cycle path, provided you cycle the route from the source. Have a good trip. 👍🏻🍀

Here lies the Brunnquell - a karst spring that has a discharge of 200 liters per second. The spring is fed by rainwater from the area surrounding Hildburghausen. The water emerges from the porous soil over several hundred meters.
