The TIRA space surveillance radar primarily serves as an experimental carrier for the development and investigation of radar methods for the detection and reconnaissance of objects in space. TIRA is also in demand for supporting space missions: Space agencies from all over the world draw on the special capabilities of the Fraunhofer scientists and their facility. The radar is protected by a radome (white shell). The radome has a diameter of 47.5 meters, making it the largest in the world. The building is approximately 56 meters high in total and can be seen as a white "sphere" from a great distance. Inside, there is an antenna with a diameter of 34 meters. It can be rotated 360° in azimuth (horizontal) and 90° in elevation (vertical). The movable part weighs 240 tons and can be rotated at a speed of 24° per second (in azimuth) or one revolution in 15 seconds. The TIRA system includes a tracking radar (Tracking) and an imaging radar (Imaging). The high-power, narrow-band, coherent tracking radar has a transmission frequency in the L-band (1.333 GHz), and the imaging radar has a transmission frequency in the Ku-band (16.7 GHz) and is equipped with high target-resolution bandwidth. ... The dry grasslands of the Rodderberg nature reserve are well maintained and rare butterflies can still be observed here.

Long before Drachenfels Castle stood in the Siebengebirge Mountains, the Romans used stone for their constructions downstream of the Rhine. Initially, gravity (the rock rolling downstream) was used to transport the stones. In later times, donkeys were the primary means of transport.

The old St. Gereon Church in the Wachtberg district of Berkum was built in 1770 on the site of a previous church, with the nave being constructed first. The church tower was added in 1783, and in 1898, a sacristy was added to the late Baroque building. Due to the strong population influx after the Second World War, the new, significantly larger St. Maria Rosenkranzkönigin Church was consecrated in 1971 at the site ("Am Bollwerk"). Since 1971, the old St. Gereon Church was used by the Protestant Heiland Parish under a usage agreement, before this agreement was terminated on December 31, 2016, due to structural defects. The old St. Gereon Church, not to be confused with the church of the same name in Niederbachem, has not been used since then. However, the archdiocese and parish have retained the church to this day.
