The first church in the village may date back to a noble private church belonging to the Counts of Comburg-Rothenburg dating back to around 1050, who then donated these, along with other properties in the Ochsenfurt district, to the Neumünster Abbey in Würzburg. The first priest, Gernodus, is mentioned in 1165, and a separate parish church was first built in 1245. In the first half of the 15th century, the Neumünster Abbey, to which the parish had already belonged in 1300, rose to become the village lord and largest landowner by 1803. From around 1420, the village was provided with a village moat and earthwork, as well as three gatehouses. The church and cemetery were surrounded by a high wall. These fortifications were demolished between 1817 and 1860 – today, only a section of the old churchyard wall remains. (https://wuerzburgwiki.de/wiki/St._Peter_und_Paul_(Hopferstadt))
