In front of the Ark castle lies the Bolo-Hovuz Mosque. Next to the mosque built in 1712 ("above the pond") there is a water basin and a minaret. Its front is an impressive, shade-providing summer iwan with 20 high columns, richly decorated with sculptures and paintings.

Through the jewelers' bazaar, one reaches the Ulugh Beg Madrasah. This one also very classic, two-storied, harmonious, strict patterns. At the door it says: "The pursuit of knowledge is the duty of every Muslim man and every Muslim woman(!)".

At the Labi Hovuz pond lies the Nodir-Devonbegi-Khanaqa. The information about it remains unclear; based on its structure, it was clearly a large mosque, today it houses the Museum of Applied Arts. On the "second side" of the pond is the Kukeldash-Medrese, the largest madrasa in Bukhara, today a handicraft courtyard. On the "third side" stands the Nodir-Devonbegi-Medrese with fantasy parrot-cranes on the tile decor of the front facade(!).

On a wide square rises the Ark castle: large, imposing, high. The hill was artificially piled up. The walls were created/are being created anew a few years ago or currently. At the top awaits the Friday Mosque (beautiful, also with a summer iwan with a great wooden ceiling), now a calligraphy museum with wooden columns, and a few alleys and houses for visitors. A large part of the castle area is destroyed (the bombs of General Frunse in 1920 against the ruler...). In the buildings a museum has been set up; we are impressed by the throne courtyard surrounded on three sides by wooden columns and roofs.

The Qala Minor, the thick short minaret, which despite its 28 m height is only a minaret stump (diameter 14 m); originally it was supposed to be the highest of its kind at 80m.

The Itchan Qala, the walled old town of Khiva, is somewhat disconcerting... completely different than expected... like a film set from Babelsberg... everything is clean, polished, paved with large stone slabs, wide streets and plenty of space between houses, merchants and cafes everywhere and tourism, residential buildings turned into hotels... What's missing: the soul of the place. It seems to have been cleaned and bulldozed away. A living museum. Although locals still live here, the number of houses seems to have significantly decreased and the width of the streets increased; and there are plans to "relocate" these residents as well. (So, naturally, we are also part of the problem.) You buy a ticket for a relatively large amount of money, which then gives you access to most museums/palaces/etc. (some still require an extra charge). And there are quite a few in the old town, within the city walls.
