The Schwarzenschwall Castle is a ruined spur castle on a granite rock at 470 m above sea level on the right bank of the Waldnaab River valley in the Falkenberg Forest, south of the market town of Falkenberg in the Upper Palatinate district of Tirschenreuth in Bavaria. Today's castle ruins only reveal two section ditches and are registered as archaeological monument D-3-6139-0027 "Medieval Schwarzenschwall Castle" by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation. Quick Facts The castle was probably built by the Lords of Falkenberg during the 13th century; this family was mentioned in 1154 as "Pilegrin de Valkenberch." In 1274, it passed to the Lords of Leuchtenberg through the marriage of Gebhardt VI of Leuchtenberg and a Jutta. The castle is described as a ministerial seat. The castle was first recorded under the name Schwarzenschwall in 1294, and in the same year, the Leuchtenberg family sold it to the Waldsassen Monastery. The castle subsequently changed hands several times, passing to Marquard von Redwitz. He pawned it to Peter Pfreimder, who sold it back to Waldsassen Monastery in 1401. By 1363, the castle was already a ruin; in 1513, it was mentioned again as Schwarzenschwall Castle; it was no longer mentioned after the 17th century.
