However, the most important moment in the village's history occurred during WWII after the kidnapping of the German general Kraipe and his transfer to Anogia. The Germans surrounded the village and massacred all the men who had not managed to escape to the Ida Mountains before destroying all 800 houses in the village.

Many of the small churches belong to local families, so they are not always open. This is also the grave site of two Cretan freedom fighters.

Historically very interesting, at some point an attempt was made to improve it for tourism, and as is so often the case in Crete, the money ran out and a bit of it remained, a shame. Nevertheless, it's worth a visit, although the cave now probably belongs more to pigeons than to people.

Apart from the history and the inglorious role of the Germans, Anogia is now a place worth seeing with nice taverns and the birthplace of the well-known singer Nikos Xilouris.

Zeus Cave (Idean Grotto). The cave entrance is at an altitude of 1538 meters, so climbing is a must. The god Zeus is said to have spent his youth here and later handed over the laws of the land to his son Minos, the mythical king of Crete. Here, too, more was definitely planned, the entrance area looks half-finished. The cave itself is large and full of pigeons.
