The statue is known as "Panagia Gorgona" (roughly "Holy Virgin Mermaid" or "Our Lady Mermaid"). It was created by the Athenian sculptor Giorgos Xenoulis. The image is based on a local legend. Near the Bay of Kini, a fisherman is said to have fallen from his boat and found himself in great distress. A mermaid came to his aid and rescued him to shore. The bronze sculpture depicts the moment when she holds a dying or rescued sailor in her arms. The statue is a tribute and memorial to all men from the traditional fishing community of Kini who lost their lives at sea.

You can hardly see it when you stand in front of it. It is probably not open to the public

In any case, it is a very beautiful bay and since you can only get there on foot or by boat, it is guaranteed not to be overcrowded

Beautiful bay, but it is worth going over the hill to the next bay (you can see it on the left) with the trees. There is much less going on there and the trees provide enough shade if it is too sunny
