Heathland on the sandy soils inland is an ancient, semi-natural landscape formed over centuries. As a landscape type, it has been influenced by humans; human-managed grazing was much more intensive than naturally occurring grazing. Under the influence of naturally occurring grazing, some heathland areas would completely or partially transition into other, more complex ecosystems, such as a mixture of grassland and forest. Heathland is a relatively simple (lower) ecosystem where, if conditions are right, grass and trees will grow. Today, intensive grazing by herds of sheep, Highland cattle, and wild horses, for example, keeps the heathland relatively open, preventing grasses and trees from permanently establishing themselves.

Along the Laambeek there are several small ponds constructed by humans (once for private use?) that have now been beautifully reclaimed by nature and the environment.
