I loved them back in my childhood! There used to be a toy shop very close by. Otherwise, some gadgets and optical illusion elements are scattered around the city center. A stroll is worth it even with the increasing number of vacant shops.

Beautiful half-timbered house in Verden an der Aller.

At the foot of the former defense tower, which has survived from the medieval fortifications of Verden, stands the executioner's house. This is a half-timbered house from 1553, which was structurally altered in the years 1714/15. Colloquially, the house is also called "Bödelei". Until 1831, the executioners of Verden lived here in the house with a courtyard and a small garden. In the executioner's house, in the semi-underground prison cell, an unadorned cellar hole, the inmates sat behind several massive oak doors. The only source of light was a barred window opening high above the heads of the inmates. The "painful interrogation" also took place here, i.e. the accused was forced to confess. In 1838, the defense tower was converted into a prison with eight cells and a guardroom.

A short stop is worthwhile here; with a bit of luck, you can observe white storks nesting or over the meadows.
