From a distance, one might mistake it for a typical wayside cross, like the small sacred monuments one encounters in many places. But upon closer inspection, the true significance of this memorial reveals itself: to commemorate the many victims claimed by war and tyranny in so many places. Thus, they remain significant today as a constant reminder to maintain peace—despite the significant time gap between then and the present, these memorials lose none of their relevance.

The around Cox Green is a lovely route. It can (in most cases) get very clarty/muddy. So I'd recommend wearing trail shoes/boots/wellies or trainers that your not going to be bothered about getting muddy.

theres not many parking spaces at the bottom so be prepared to park in herrington park and walk over the road. and then its steps leading all the way to the monument, try and pick a clear day to enjoy the view

September 3, 2024, View of Penshaw Monument

The Penshaw Monument stands at the south-western edge of Penshaw Hill. It was built in 1844–1845 as a monument to John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham. It was designed in the style of an ancient Greek temple and built using the local gritstone. It's been owned and managed by the National Trust since 1939.

Ascend a winding staircase to the summit of Penshaw Hill, where a magnificent 21-meter Victorian folly stands amidst awe-inspiring vistas that stretch across Sunderland and its surrounding countryside. The folly is one of the North East's most prominent landmarks, and can be seen for miles around. Locals are so proud of the monument it even features on the Sunderland Football Club's badge.

February 1, 2024, Penshaw Quarry Tunnel

On Seaham Harbour, the smaller harbour stonework, an inscription states the stone came from this quarry. London Bridge relocated to Arizona is also made with that stone!

Graffiti can be seen on just about all bridge underpasses. Some of it is a mess, some of it adds a bit brightness when passing through
