At 11:11 am on 27 November 1944 a huge explosion occurred at the RAF Fauld underground munitions facility. The accident caused over 3,500 tonnes of bomb and ammunition to explode, which resulted in this massive crater. The site is still considered dangerous with possible unexploded ordnance, so please obey the signs and stay on the path.

Interesting place to stop for a rest and picnic. There is a bench and a number of sculptures to see overlooked by the Nescafe factory. Sandwich shop in Hatton. Each column has a vertical slot through which the sun will shine for 3-4 minutes at ‘true’ noon every (sunny) day, creating a line of light in the shadow cast by the column. The beam of light shining in the shadow of the column will vary with the time of year. This cycle links the six sculptures to the passage of time – celebrating the past, present and future of the Forest.

Impressive ruined castle. Privately owned but open for visitors (need to buy a ticket). Hard to get a good view from outside the grounds as surrounded by high walls, fences and gates. Scenic church next to the castle with a number of picnic benches. Mary Queen of Scots was held here at one time (but then she seems to have been imprisoned in nearly every old house in the country!).
