West Linton is an attractive village with beautiful ancient buildings and a lovely selection of cafΓ©s and restaurants, including the Olde Toll Tea House and The Old Bakehouse Restaurant. Perhaps one of the most interesting things about West Linton is that it's one of the oldest market settlements in Scotland.

There's a track running adjacent to the River Tweed here. The surface was a bit wet and muddy, but able to sustain a higher speed through it.

When you cross the bridge over Lyne Water, many species of dippers, wagtails and sandpipers can be seen bobbing up in search of insect prey. Keep an eye out for Grey Heron, and the occasional great spotted woodpecker. Further down the pathway is Barns Tower/House. Commissioned by James Burnet of Barns, the house was designed in 1773 by the contractor Michael Nasmyth (although James Brown of Edinburgh is listed as the architect) in a classic Georgian style, note the symmetry and simplicity of its form. Michael was the father of the well-known artist Alexander Nasmyth. The Ionic portico is considered to be a later addition; however, the three urns may be original.

Nice cafe on the junction out of West Linton. Nice coffee and scones. Also has veggie haggis for your morning rolls!

St Andrew's Church stands towards the south end of the village with the large village green park on one side and the main street on the other. Shaped like a fairly stubby rectangle and tower. Church keeps its charms hidden from open view behind the trees.

Not to be confused with "The Old Manor Bridge" some 300 yards away, this beautiful bridge serves as an intersection point of two possible walks. Option one is to head for the old bridge and follow the road up the hill to a picnic area, through the woods to Peebles and back along the river past Neidpath castle. The other route takes you over the style and down the steps to head west along the river for another easier river loop. You can park your car by the road on the south side of the bridge. Two walks or one? You decide.
