The Santo Amaro do Areeiro Fort, also known as the Santo Amaro do Rio de Oeiras Fort, the Old Fort or the Areeiro Fort, is located in a dominant position, next to Praia da Lage, on the right bank of the Ribeira da Lage, to the west of Praia de Santo Amaro. It belongs to the parish of Oeiras and São Julião da Barra, Paço de Arcos e Caxias, municipality of Oeiras, Greater Lisbon, in Portugal. This fort was built in the context of the War of the Restoration of Portuguese Independence, by order of the War Council of King John IV (1640-56), with the aim of reinforcing the defense of the mouth of the Tagus Estuary, supporting the defense provided by the São Julião da Barra Fort.
