The North Rim Ranger Station is opened irregularly in the summertime. During the wintertime, it is closed. It offers a self-pay station for the park entrance fee, a self-registration kiosk for wilderness payments (when the Ranger Station is closed), and there's an offering of maps, information, a picnic shelter, a toilet, and a water fountain.

Not much of a hike but definitely a great place to stop when driving past. It's a short walk to the viewing point and once you are there you are presented with the best view of the Painted Wall in the entire National Park. The Painted Wall is the tallest wall in Colorado and the third tallest in The Lower 48 after El Cap and Notch Peak.

Chasm View Trail is not the longest of hikes but it offers incredible views on the section of path that follows the canyon, with the Painted Wall Viewing spot as its definite highlight. On the South Rim, there is a dedicated Painted Wall 'hike' but if you are on the North Rim this is the hike to do if you want to catch this magnificent feature in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The Painted Wall is the tallest wall in Colorado and the third tallest in The Lower 48 after El Cap and Notch Peak.

When hiking the North Vista Trail I recommend hiking this very short spur trail to this point. There are some beautiful canyon views to be enjoyed!

Exclamation Point is an incredible viewing point just off the North Vista Trail. This is the final destination for some hikers, but it is possible to continue toward Green Mountain to find a view from higher up.

This is a wonderful hike with interpretive signs starting at the end of the South Rim Road. It might be a short distance to Warner Point, but it's not the easiest of trails and the heat also can play a major role in its difficulty. There are a bunch of shady benches spread out over the trail to catch your breath. Take every chance you get to enjoy the stunning views both north (West Elk Mountains), south (San Juan Mountain Range), and at the end of the trail (Gunnison River and the Black Canyon). Easy hiking trails in Gunnison Gorge Wilderness often traverse high desert plateaus and pinyon-juniper uplands. While some trails offer panoramic views of the dramatic black granite and red sandstone canyons, the easy routes generally avoid the most strenuous descents into the gorge itself. You'll experience varied environments, from adobe badlands to areas with extensive pinyon-juniper forests.
Yes, several easy trails are well-suited for families. The Warner Point Nature Trail is a popular choice, offering a relatively short 1.6-mile path with minimal elevation gain and panoramic views. Another excellent option is Exclamation Point, an easy 1.5-mile path providing impressive views of the gorge and its geological formations.
The Gunnison Gorge Wilderness is generally dog-friendly, but it's crucial to keep your dog on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors. Always pack out waste. Check specific trail regulations before you go, as rules can vary.
Easy hikes offer stunning views of the region's unique geology. For instance, the Warner Point Nature Trail provides panoramic views of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and the distant San Juan Mountains. The Exclamation Point trail also offers impressive vistas of the gorge and its ancient geological formations.
Spring and fall are generally the best seasons for easy hiking in Gunnison Gorge Wilderness. Temperatures are milder, making for more comfortable conditions. Summers can be very hot, especially in the exposed high desert areas, while winters can bring snow and colder temperatures, potentially making some trails inaccessible or more challenging.
Yes, permits are required for use of the wilderness area, including day use. It's advisable to check the official Bureau of Land Management (BLM) website for the most current information on permit requirements and fees. You can find more details at blm.gov.
While many trails are out-and-back, some options offer a loop experience or can be combined for one. For example, the View of the Painted Wall loop from North Rim Campground provides an easy loop experience with scenic views.
Easy hikes in Gunnison Gorge Wilderness typically range from under a mile to around 2.5 miles. For instance, the Chasm View Nature Trail is about 0.6 miles and takes around 35 minutes, while the Warner Point Nature Trail is 1.6 miles and can be completed in about 45 minutes.

The diverse ecosystems of Gunnison Gorge Wilderness support a wide array of wildlife. On easy hikes, you might spot mule deer, various small mammals, and a variety of raptors and neo-tropical birds. Keep an eye out for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep in certain areas, though they are more elusive.
While many trails offer views of the canyon carved by the Gunnison River, direct access to the river on easy trails is less common, as the river flows through the deep gorge. However, trails like the Warner Point Nature Trail provide sweeping vistas that include the river's path through the canyon from above.
Given the high desert environment, it's recommended to wear layers, even on easy hikes. Sturdy hiking shoes are essential, along with sun protection like a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Always carry plenty of water, as the area can be very dry and exposed.
