October 11, 2023, Big Rock

Big Rock is one of the two major monoliths, or large glacial erratic boulders in the Monoliths Park. Big Rock is just north of Little Rock on Beaver Dam Hill. It sits in a small swamp of an unknown depth, which can flood when there has been heavy rain. This is a great place to snap some photos of this unique geological feature.

October 11, 2023, The Yellow Trail

The Yellow Trail is one of the main trails into the Monoliths. As you travel along this densely wooded trail, in the spring and summer be on the lookout for several vernal pools. Also known as ephemeral pools, autumnal pools, and temporary woodland ponds, these pools fill in the autumn and winter and are usually dry by the middle of the summer. These pools are vital parts of the New England woodland ecosystem. Many amphibians, like salamanders, newts, and frogs, and insects, like fairy shrimp, breed and lay their eggs in these pools. This is a great trail for anyone interested in the ecology of Cape Ann. A map of the other trails in Monolith Park can be found here: https://thetrustees.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/monoliths-trail-map.pdf

October 11, 2023, Haskell Pond

Haskell Pond is a large freshwater lake just west of Red Rocks. There is a network of hiking, trail running, and mountain biking trails around the pond as well as an old public road that once gave access to this city reservoir. As you hike, be on the lookout for bird and other animals, as well as rock climbers working on boulder "problems" (shorter routes on boulders where you do not need ropes, only thick pads below) in the woods surrounding the pond. You can access the trails and old roads around Haskell Pond from the east through Red Rocks or from the north from Essex Ave and Forest Lane.
