Tips from the Community

Andrus
May 25, 2025, Inspiration Point

Regarded as one of The Catskills’ greatest lookouts, Inspiration Point truly lives up to the name. Still, don't let the name fool you as there isn't just a single viewpoint on the trail. In fact you'll have many excellent views as you make your way up and down the mountains.

The views from the top of Kaaterskill Falls are stunning, hikers can stand on a platform that extends over the forest edge, viewing the eastern Catskill Mountains and falls. Kaaterskill Falls, a two-stage waterfall on Spruce Creek, drops 260 feet from the top to the base of its second tier. As a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, it attracts over 200,000 visitors annually and has been a central attraction in the Catskill Park Forest Preserve since the early 1800s.

A short spur trail will lead you to this great viewpoint over the mountains. If you're hiking the Hunter Mountain Loop trail there's really no reason not to take the extra few minutes to hike out to the overlook.

September 4, 2024, Diamond Notch Falls

Though the falls are relatively short, at only 15 feet, they are in a stunning location and make for great photos. Keep in mind that the falls may be easy to access the trail has plenty of rocks and can be slippery so proper footwear is essential. Also, this is a beautiful location all year round, but visiting during the fall color season is truly special.

November 17, 2023, North Lake

North Lake is situated in Haines Falls and surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Catskill Mountains. The lake is a popular starting point for hikers as multiple trails, such as the Escarpment Trail, start from here. If you are looking for a shorter hike, the lake itself is surrounded by a beautiful trail.

Hunter Mountain is the second highest mountain in the Catskills. From the top of the fire tower, you have views of the surrounding mountains as well as of the Hudson Valley, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Epic!
