July 23, 2025, Neue Bamberger Hütte

The Neue Bamberger Hütte is beautifully situated in a beautiful high valley behind Kelchsau in the Kitzbühel Alps. In summer, guests can enjoy magnificent green alpine meadows and numerous easily accessible summits. The hut offers rooms and dormitories of varying sizes and has been designated a child-friendly hut, which can be both a blessing and a curse depending on family status and occupancy. ;-)

The Kelchalm / Bochumer Hütte is located in the Kitzbühel South Mountains at an altitude of 1,432 m. It was built in 1832 to provide protection for the miners who worked there. The copper obtained was used, among other things, to make goblets, hence the name “Kelchalm”. The hut has been owned by the Bochum section of the DAV since 1964. The hats are managed all year round. So it's worth climbing up here. The food is homemade and very tasty! We recommend the sausages!!! The hut manager, Ilona, is very nice and can give lots of tips on hikes in the area. In winter you can rent a sledge from the hut and toboggan back to the parking lot (approx. 5km). Source: the Kelchalm flyer.

The Bochumer Hütte (aka Kelchalm) is a former, almost 200-year-old shelter for copper miners. The name Kelchalm comes from the fact that goblets, among other things, were made from copper in the past. The entrance to a former copper mine is located above the stable belonging to the hut. The hut was taken over by the DAV in 1964 and has been called the Bochumer Hütte ever since. The Kelchalm is located at an altitude of 1,432 meters and is also open in winter from the beginning of December and, thanks to its altitude, offers a beautiful and relatively snow-sure starting point for ski tours and snowshoe hikes in winter. Tuesdays are a (gastronomic) day of rest for day guests. It is open all week for overnight guests and breakfast and dinner are also available on Tuesdays. Dining and overnight guests are offered the free opportunity to rent a toboggan for the descent and to park the toboggan down in the valley above the parking lot. The toboggan ride is 4km long into the valley and takes between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on your ability. Great fun. The hut offers 58 beds on the two upper floors, 28 of which are in bunk beds, 24 in shared rooms and 6 places in twin rooms. The washrooms have hot water at the sinks and two showers each. Shower tokens for 5 min warm showers are available for €5. Charging options for cell phones in the dining room. The hut landlady Ilona cooks well and enjoys cooking. On the snack platter, the sausage is partly made from animals raised on the Alpine pasture. The eggs in Kaiserschmarrn come from our own chickens. The insider tip is the cheese dumpling duo with one dumpling in the soup and a second fried dumpling on salad.

The Neue Bamberger is an Alpine club hut where you can also spend the night. Ascents are possible from both Kelchsau and Königsleiten/Ronach. However, if you set off from the south, you have a long stage ahead of you. The two Salzach vultures are ideal as a local peak. Doable with snowshoes, but also a nice route with touring skis.

The hut is also ideal for families with children. The climb from the car park is also manageable for small children from around 4 years of age. There is a lot to discover around the hut, the hut itself has a small stable with chickens, sheep, pigs, dogs, bunnies (and if the children ask nicely, they can help feed them). The hut also has family rooms and multi-bed rooms: be sure to reserve in advance.

Great view from the terrace up to the Ellmauer Tor and down into the day with the Großvenediger in the background (and deckchairs to enjoy the view). The Kaiserschmarrn is really good - depending on the occupancy also with service. Easy to reach from the Wochenbrunner, so a mixed crowd of hikers, mountaineers and a few climbers - but significantly less hustle and bustle than below.
