The view of the front can be seen on every postcard. However, the view of the back of St. Bartholomä can be enjoyed on a very short walk.

Please note that this bike/MTB highlight is off the official cycle path network. In the national park, cycling is only permitted on the paths that have been approved for this purpose, in order to protect the sensitive habitats of animals and plants and to avoid conflicts between user groups. Therefore I ask you to explore this highlight only on foot. Currently, according to the 1992 regulation and the 2012 amendment, cycling is only allowed on the following roads: 1. Hirschbichlstraße (state road 2099) and from the Bindalm bus stop to the alpine huts on the Bindalm; 2. Eiskar forest road to the fork in the path to the Schartennalm; 3. Eckau-Forststraße to Eckau-Alm with turnoff to the Schwarzederer-Wendeplatte; 4. Schappachstraße and Hammerstielstraße to Kühroint - turning point in front of the Archenkanzel - and forest road to Herrenroint; 5. Gotzenstraße and Hochbahnweg to Gotzenalm and access to the Stahlhaus; 6. Ligeretstrasse. The supplement to approved cycle paths from 2012 is in the Official Journal for the district of Berchtesgadener Land No. 20 from 05/15/2012 on page 127ff. (https://www.lra-bgl.de/t/das-landratsamt/amtsblaetter/). The ordinance is based on Art. 31 Para. 1 and Art. 43 Para. 2 No. 3 of the Bavarian Nature Conservation Act (BayNatSchG). We would be very grateful for your help to protect nature! If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. https://www.nationalpark-berchtesgaden.de/

From the Königsee you go to the first station St. Bartholomä, from here it is not very far to the Kührointalm. It is also a good idea to hike back to Königsee (T3-T2) with beautiful views of the Königsee awaiting you. Who continues to Salet Station! There, after a short hike, the Obersee awaits and rewards you with beautiful nature and Germany's highest waterfall (Röthbachfall).

The lakes around Königssee are renowned for their distinct alpine setting within the Berchtesgaden National Park. Lake Königssee is a large, fjord-like body of water with crystal-clear, emerald-green waters, framed by towering peaks like the Watzmann massif. The region also features smaller, secluded alpine lakes like Obersee and remote karst lakes such as Funtensee, offering a diverse range of experiences from accessible boat tours to challenging high-alpine hikes.
The best way to explore Lake Königssee is by taking an electric boat tour. These tours, which have been operating since 1909, take you across the lake to various points of interest, including the iconic St. Bartholomew Pilgrimage Church. During the boat trip, guides often demonstrate the famous Königssee echo by playing a flugelhorn against the steep rock faces.
For stunning panoramic views, visit the Malerwinkel, a popular vantage point on the north shore of Königssee. From here, you can see across the lake to St. Bartholomew's Church and the Schönfeldspitze. The Jennerbahn cable car also offers spectacular vistas of the lake and surrounding mountains.
Yes, the Königssee region offers several family-friendly options. The electric boat tours on Lake Königssee are suitable for all ages. For easy walks, consider the Malerwinkel circuit, which offers beautiful views of the lake. You can find more easy hiking routes, including barrier-free options, in the Easy hikes around Königssee guide.
Obersee is a smaller, secluded alpine lake located just south of Königssee. To reach it, you must first take an electric boat across Königssee to the Salet Pier. From Salet, it's a short 15-minute hike. Obersee is famous for its pristine mirror reflections of the surrounding Bavarian Alps, its crystal-clear emerald waters, and an iconic wooden boathouse. Beyond Obersee, you can also hike to the Röthbach Waterfall, Germany's highest waterfall.
The Königssee region offers a wide range of hiking opportunities, from easy strolls to challenging high-alpine treks. Easy routes include the Malerwinkel circuit and walks around St. Bartholomew's. More challenging hikes can take you to the Ice Chapel from St. Bartholomew's, or to the remote Funtensee on the Steinernes Meer plateau. For detailed routes, explore the Easy hikes around Königssee and Mountain Hikes around Königssee guides.
Yes, there are cycling opportunities in the wider Königssee region. You can find various routes, including moderate and difficult options, that offer scenic rides. For specific cycling tours and their details, refer to the Cycling around Königssee guide.
Funtensee is a remote karst lake situated on the Steinernes Meer plateau. It is famous for being Germany's coldest spot, often recording extremely low temperatures due to its unique topography. Reaching Funtensee requires a significant and challenging hike, typically involving a boat trip to St. Bartholomä and then a demanding ascent. The Kärlinger Haus mountain hut is located on its shore, offering a resting point for hikers.
The most prominent historical and cultural site is the St. Bartholomew Pilgrimage Church, with its distinctive red onion domes, accessible only by boat on Königssee. Another historical point of interest is the Seeklause - Triftsteg, a weir that historically regulated the lake and was used for timber transport.
The best time to visit depends on your preferred activities. Summer offers warm weather for boat tours and hiking, but can be very crowded. Spring and autumn provide cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and beautiful scenery, especially for hiking. Winter offers a mystical mood over the lake and opportunities for winter walks, with paths like the Malerwinkel cleared and gritted.
While Königssee can be very popular, you can find more tranquility by visiting Obersee, which is only accessible by boat and a short hike, making it less crowded. For a truly secluded high-alpine experience, the challenging hike to Funtensee rewards visitors with serene natural beauty away from the main tourist paths.
