The North Beach, Lake Willoughby loop from Johns River offers a truly unique road cycling experience, often compared to riding through a Norwegian fjord. You'll traverse forested mountains with extensive views of Lake Willoughby, nestled dramatically between Mount Hor and Mount Pisgah. The route combines paved sections with adventurous gravel roads, making for a varied and engaging ride that showcases the region's stunning natural features.

This moderate 50.9 miles (81.9 km) loop involves a significant 2394 feet (730 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 3 hours and 36 minutes. While the start point is near the Johns River area, be aware that some sections are unpaved and might require wider tires or even walking your bike. Plan your visit for warmer months to avoid snow and ice, and ensure you carry enough water for the duration.

What makes this Lake Willoughby cycling route stand out is the combination of challenging terrain and breathtaking scenery within the Willoughby State Forest. North Beach itself provides beautiful views and is a popular spot for swimming in the clear, chilly waters. This route is ideal for road cyclists seeking a memorable journey through Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, offering both a physical test and visual rewards.

This is a beautiful place to stop right by the road with views right along the length of Lake Willoughby's. The water is shallow so it's great for swimming in the summer too. Mount Pisgah to the east is easily recognizable as it plummets from the summit straight into the lake.
