Unstrut Valley Nature Reserve between Nägelstedt and Großvargula

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This pretty section of the route runs parallel and in parts very close to the Unstrut, which still flows in its original riverbed in several loops in this area. On the northern side, a former vineyard protects, the bank area is lined with pollarded willows and dense bank vegetation, which offers valuable protection for insects and birds in particular. 35 species of butterflies can be discovered in the nature reserve. In the middle of the section and on the outskirts of Großvargula there are several clean seating areas that invite you to linger. Here you should take a break. :-)

June 11, 2025, Japanese Garden Bad Langensalza

The grounds are wonderfully well-maintained and authentic. The colorful koi in the lake are an attraction in their own right. The teahouse doesn't open until 1 p.m. However, there were only a few visitors during our morning visit, so we were able to enjoy the garden in peace. https://badlangensalza.de/kur-tourismus/entdecken-erleben/sehenswertes/parks-themengaerten/japanischer-garten/

The Japanese Garden is one of the city of Bad Langensalza's five themed gardens. Located directly on Langensalza's spa and garden mile, it is an impressive park with pavilions, a pond, and a Japanese-style dry garden. https://badlangensalza.de/kur-tourismus/entdecken-erleben/sehenswertes/parks-themengaerten/japanischer-garten/

This route from Erfurt to the mouth of the Gera can only be recommended. It is better to stop and wait if there is oncoming traffic on the causeway.

A bit tight, but everything goes with consideration. And driving on the dam is always a pleasure. Just before the Gera flows into the Unstrut.
