We discovered the Strandbadcafe, located near the train station next to the boat dock. The location is right on Lake Ossiach. It was lovely 🤩 to watch the activity on the water and enjoy something to eat and drink. The apricot dumplings were delicious 😋

Many outdoor trails in Carinthia are dog-friendly, but specific rules for gorges and nature parks can vary. It's always best to check the regulations for individual trails or protected areas beforehand. Generally, dogs should be kept on a leash, especially in crowded areas or near wildlife.
The terrain on Carinthian waterfall hikes is diverse. You can expect paths through dramatic gorges with wooden walkways and bridges, forest trails, and sections along rivers. Some routes, particularly in areas like the Hohe Tauern National Park, might involve more rugged, high-alpine terrain, while others in the Nock Mountains offer gentler, rounded peaks and alpine meadows.
Yes, Carinthia offers several circular routes that allow you to experience waterfalls and return to your starting point. A popular choice is the Tscheppa Gorge Waterfall – Tschauko Falls loop from Unterloibl Tscheppaschlucht Parkplatz, a moderate 4.5-mile path featuring multiple waterfalls and scenic crossings.
Beyond the waterfalls themselves, Carinthia's trails often lead through stunning natural formations. You might encounter dramatic gorges like the Ragga gorge or Tscheppa gorge, unique geological sites, and picturesque mountain lakes. Some routes also offer panoramic views from summits like Goldeck Summit Cross or Gerlitzen Summit.
Many popular waterfall trails and gorges in Carinthia have designated parking areas, often at the trailhead or nearby visitor centers. For specific routes, such as the Malteiner Waterfall Nature Trail or the Groppenstein Gorge, you'll typically find clear signage for parking. It's advisable to check route descriptions for parking details before your trip.
Public transport options exist for reaching some waterfall trailheads in Carinthia, particularly for more accessible and popular locations. The combination of impressive waterfalls and the surrounding alpine scenery is frequently highlighted.
While Carinthia has many well-known waterfalls and gorges, exploring trails slightly off the main tourist paths can reveal hidden gems. The region's diverse topography means there are countless smaller cascades and less-frequented spots, especially within the extensive Hohe Tauern National Park or the Nock Mountains. Researching local maps and less-trafficked routes can lead to unique discoveries.
Carinthia offers a range of difficulty levels for waterfall hikes. You'll find 17 easy routes, perfect for leisurely walks, while the majority (109 routes) are moderate, suitable for those with some hiking experience. For more adventurous hikers, there are 34 difficult trails, often involving steeper ascents and more challenging terrain, particularly in the high-alpine regions.
While Carinthia is famous for its warm, clear lakes, wild swimming directly at the base of waterfalls or in gorge rivers can be dangerous due to strong currents, cold temperatures, and slippery rocks. It's generally not recommended. However, many waterfall hikes are located near the region's numerous lakes, such as Lake Wörthersee or Millstätter See, where safe and enjoyable swimming opportunities abound.
