Over the years, a total of 13 mills, including 11 flour mills, have existed in the former municipality of Ruinen. Only the De Zaandplatte flour mill has been preserved. Research has shown that the mill, which was located on the Hoogeveensche Vaart near café De Molen in Echten, dates from 1789 or earlier. We know this from maps and names of millers. In 1962, the municipality of Ruinen purchased the mill (a ground sailor) from the then owner, who could no longer maintain the mill. The mill was demolished and moved to its current location. The municipality wanted to turn it into a summer house. In 1964 the rebuilding of the mill as a "belt mill" was completed and it was given the name "De Zaandplatte". From 1964 to 1990/1991 the mill was used as a summer house. The mill had sails and there was a grinding chair in the mill with all the wheels further up, but the mill did not run in those years. That was not possible, because at one point the trees simply grew through the blades. In 1989 it was rumored that the mill would be turned into a pancake restaurant. In response, the Friends of the Ruiner Mill De Zaandplatte Foundation was founded in 1990 with the aim of preserving the mill and restoring it to the original mill.
