The Castello di Barengo stands on a hill behind the town, in an elevated position overlooking the surrounding plain, along the road that originally connected the Via Francigena with the fords on the Sesia river. The original fifteenth-century structure has undergone numerous modifications and alterations over the centuries, and was already partially in ruins at the beginning of the nineteenth century. In 1849, the fortress underwent a restoration that altered its original layout. In the aftermath of the First World War, the property passed to Count Gaudenzio Tornielli di Borgolavezzaro, who commissioned the architect Carlo Nigra to reconstruct the complex according to the stylistic canons of the Middle Ages. Further restorations were subsequently carried out by the Boroli family, the current owners. Despite the reconstructions, however, there remain several testimonies of the original construction, such as the walls of the stands, the foundations and some entrance doors.

A small church located in the hilly area and dating back to the 12th century, in an excellent state of preservation and located in a panoramic position, so much so that nearby they have installed the giant bench of la Vila (of the municipality of Villareggia)

A very pretty stretch along the canal. But be careful not to fall in. :-))

Be careful on the carriage road, the one with 20 hairpin bends that goes down towards Tina has ruts formed by water high in the curves.

Vercelli offers a wide selection of gravel bike trails, with over 80 routes available for exploration. These routes cater to various skill levels, from moderate to difficult, ensuring there's something for every gravel biker.
Vercelli's gravel trails are incredibly diverse. You can expect to ride through the unique flat expanses of rice paddies, especially striking when flooded between April and May. Other routes traverse the rolling Monferrato Hills, offering vineyard-covered landscapes, and some venture into the more mountainous terrain of Valsesia, providing challenging climbs and breathtaking views of Monte Rosa.
The spring (April-May) is particularly scenic, as the vast rice paddies are flooded, creating a unique 'checkerboard sea' effect. The region generally offers good conditions from spring through autumn. While some routes might be accessible in winter, it's always best to check local weather conditions.
Yes, Vercelli offers several routes suitable for beginners or those looking for a less strenuous ride. For example, the Rocky Path in the Forest – Cadrega del Vico Geometra loop from Borgo d'Ale is a moderate 17 km trail with manageable elevation, perfect for getting started.
For experienced riders seeking a challenge, Vercelli has several difficult routes. The Big Bench No. 130, Barengo – Briona Castle loop from Ghislarengo is a demanding 114 km trail with significant elevation gain. Another option is the Castelle Tower – Trail to Gattinara loop from Gattinara, a 57.5 km route with over 700 meters of ascent.
Absolutely. The rice paddies are a defining feature of the Vercelli landscape. While not explicitly named in every route, many trails in the flatlands, such as the Cathedral of Saint Eusebius – Olcenengo loop from Vercelli, will take you through these unique agricultural areas, especially prominent during the flooding season.
Many routes offer scenic views and pass by notable natural features. For instance, the Pile dwellings at Lake Viverone – Lake Viverone loop from Cigliano provides beautiful views around Lake Viverone. Further north, the region is home to the Alta Valsesia Nature Park and the Lame del Sesia Natural Park, offering stunning natural beauty.

For families, the flatter sections through the rice paddies or along the Sesia River offer easier, more accessible rides. Look for routes with lower elevation gain and shorter distances.
