Schloß Eggmühl The former lowland castle and medieval pond complex was built in the 12th century. At that time, it was owned by the Truchsesse zu Heilsberg or the lords of Eggmühl. Around 1333, it was owned by Truchsess Ulrich von Leublfing. In 1341, Emperor Louis IV the Bavarian granted him market rights in Eggmühl. Around 1432, an architectural expansion took place with the construction of a zwinger (curtain wall) by the Nothaft brothers, to whom the lordship of Eggmühl had been mortgaged in 1403 by King Ruprecht of the Palatinate. From 1475, it housed the district court of the Dukes of Bavaria. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle was architecturally altered. In the 17th century, the granary with a half-hip roof was built. A copperplate engraving by Michael Wening from 1701 designates Eggmühl as an Electoral Castle and Lordship. The Catholic filial church of St. Lawrence, formerly the castle or fortress chapel, was built in its present form in 1720. During the Battle of Eggmühl on April 22, 1809, the castle was also fiercely contested and finally captured by the French Marshal Lannes. In 1812, the castle came into the possession of Count Maximilian von Montgelas, in 1834 to the princes of Thurn and Taxis, and was the seat of the princely Thurn and Taxis' lordship court Zaitzkofen in Eggmühl until the revolution of 1848. In 1919, the castle was acquired by retired headmaster Oskar Hirsch. Later, it was converted into a retirement home and the north wing was extended. Today, the castle is used as a BRK senior citizens' home. The castle is a structured, irregular four-wing complex around a rectangular courtyard open to the northeast, dating from the 15th century. The west wing, a former gatehouse, is a two-story building with a vaulted ground floor and a hipped roof with dormers and a swept gable. The south wing is a two-story building with a hipped roof over an irregular floor plan. The north wing is a three-story building with a hipped roof with remnants of the zwinger wall with four round rubble stone towers from 1432. Source: Excerpts from www.wikipedia.de

As a natural, almost untouched river valley, the valley of the Schwarze Laber winds its way through the Bavarian Jura.
