The Tacoma Narrows Bridge consists of two suspension bridges offering impressive views over the Puget Sound. It can be a breezy ride, especially in the fall and spring. Be alert when descending onto the bridge from the west side (Gig Harbor), as there is an entrance to the trail on the right-hand side near the bottom of the hill, and other cyclists entering the path may be unaware of others barreling down at them at high speeds. On the east side (Tacoma), use caution when crossing busy Jackson Street, as there have been several auto/bike accidents at the off-ramp.

Can be breezy at times once you clear the trees on either end, especially in the fall and spring. While descending from the west side (Gig Harbor), there is an entrance to the trail on the right hand side near the bottom of the hill. Watch out for cyclists entering the path and not watching for others barreling down at them at 30+mph. There have been several auto/bicycle accidents at the Jackson Street off ramp. Komoot features 10 running routes in and around Cutts Island Marine State Park. These routes vary in length and difficulty, offering options for different preferences, though traditional long-distance jogging paths are not a prominent feature due to the park's unique terrain.
The terrain in Cutts Island Marine State Park is quite unique. You can expect a mix of sandy and rocky beaches, especially the 'teardrop-shaped beach' at low tide, which can be explored for soft-sand running. There are also brief hiking paths up clay cliffs. The island is covered with vegetation, including forested areas, but be aware of the presence of poison oak. Dedicated long-distance, paved jogging paths are scarce.
Yes, there are routes suitable for beginners. For instance, the Running loop from Minter is an easy 3.0-mile (4.9 km) trail. Another great option is the Running loop from Swede Hill, an easy 1.9-mile (3.1 km) path winding through local natural areas. These routes offer a gentler introduction to running in the region.
Cutts Island offers impressive natural features and viewpoints. You can explore the unique clay butte with its stand of trees, and at low tide, the 'teardrop-shaped beach' of sand appears. Brief hiking paths lead up the clay cliffs to vantage points offering expansive views of the surrounding area, including mountain vistas and the calming saltwater environment of Carr Inlet. It's also an excellent spot for bird watching and wildlife viewing, with seals often resting on the sandy beach during low tide.
Cutts Island Marine State Park is unique as it is only reachable by boat, or occasionally by sandbar at extremely low tide. This means there is no direct car access or parking on the island itself. Boaters can use one of the eight mooring buoys available. For those looking to run from the mainland, routes like the Running loop from Doris Heritage Park offer a starting point from nearby parkland.
While the guide doesn't specify dog-friendly rules for the island itself, state parks in Washington generally allow dogs on leash in most areas. However, given the island's sensitive marine environment and the presence of wildlife like seals, it's always best to check the official Washington State Parks website for specific regulations regarding pets on Cutts Island Marine State Park to ensure a safe and respectful visit for all.
The best time to visit Cutts Island for exploration, which could include some running, is during low tide. This is when the 'teardrop-shaped beach' becomes accessible, and occasionally, the island can even be reached by sandbar. This allows for beach exploration and soft-sand running. The park offers beautiful mountain views and wildlife spotting opportunities year-round, but always be mindful of tidal conditions for access and safety.
Yes, many of the routes featured are circular. For example, the Cushman Powerline Trail loop from Gig Harbor is a moderate 5.8-mile (9.4 km) loop. Another option is the Cushman Powerline Trail loop from Wollochet, which is a moderate 5.3-mile (8.6 km) loop. These offer varied scenery without needing to retrace your steps.
Cutts Island Marine State Park is a fantastic spot for wildlife viewing. You might encounter seals resting on the sandy beach during low tide; remember to maintain a safe distance. The area is also ideal for bird watching, with eagles and ospreys frequently sighted. While enjoying your run, be observant and respectful of the natural habitat to ensure a positive experience for both you and the local wildlife.
As Cutts Island Marine State Park is a small, undeveloped marine park primarily accessible by boat, there are no facilities like cafes or public restrooms directly on the island. Visitors should plan accordingly and bring all necessary supplies. For amenities, you would need to visit nearby mainland communities.
The running routes in the Cutts Island Marine State Park area vary in length. You can find shorter, easy paths like the Running loop from Swede Hill at 1.9 miles (3.1 km), up to longer moderate routes such as the Cushman Powerline Trail loop from Gig Harbor, which spans 5.8 miles (9.4 km). This variety allows runners to choose a distance that suits their fitness level and available time.
Runners using komoot often appreciate the varied terrain and natural beauty of the area. While the island itself offers unique beach and cliff exploration, the surrounding routes provide opportunities to experience local natural areas and marine environments. The community enjoys the mix of easy and moderate trails, making it accessible for different ability levels, and the chance to enjoy the scenic views and fresh air.
