Mountain biking in The Flits National Nature Reserve's surrounding area features routes through the low-lying marshy grassland, fen, scrub, and woodland characteristic of the River Wye floodplain in Herefordshire. The reserve itself is a delicate wetland ecosystem with peaty soils, primarily focused on conservation and quiet enjoyment, and does not offer dedicated mountain bike trails. However, the broader region provides varied terrain for mountain biking, including paths that traverse agricultural lands and small hills. The landscape is generally flat in the immediate vicinity of the reserve, with more elevation gain found on routes extending further into Herefordshire.

St Michael's and All Angels Church is situated in the centre of the attractive village of Ewyas Harold. It is a stunning Norman-influenced, but mainly English Gothic, church. It dates from the 13th century, and apparently the walls of the tower are seven foot thick, hinting at it being the primary building at one point and used for protection purposes. The tower houses six bells, which are rung weekly.

There isn't much left of Kilpeck Castel, but there is enough to give you a sense of its situation and what it must have been like. It does offer fine views to the north, south and west, and would have dominated the village. Incidentally the photos of the carvings come from the nearby church, not the castle.

Given the region's characteristics, with river floodplains and agricultural fields, spring and summer generally offer the most pleasant conditions for mountain biking. During these seasons, trails are typically drier, and the weather is more favorable for outdoor activities. Autumn can also be beautiful, but be mindful of potentially wetter conditions.
The easy-rated trail, Knapp Farm – Outdoor Fitness Area loop from Eaton Bishop, could be suitable for families with some mountain biking experience. However, the delicate nature of the reserve itself means it's not designed for high-impact activities, so family rides should stick to the designated routes outside the reserve.
While dogs are generally welcome on public rights of way in the UK, it's essential to keep them under control, especially when passing through agricultural land with livestock. Always follow the Countryside Code, keep dogs on a lead where required, and clean up after them. The nature reserve itself has specific rules regarding pets due to its sensitive ecosystem.
The routes in this guide traverse the rural Herefordshire countryside, offering views of agricultural landscapes and the River Wye floodplain. While there are no specific 'highlights' listed for these routes, the Kilpeck Church and Churchyard – Ewyas Harold Church loop from Eaton Bishop passes by historic churches, providing points of interest.
Specific parking information for each route is usually available on the individual komoot tour pages.
