Mynydd Bodafon is a small collection of peaks including Yr Arwydd which is the highest point on the island of Anglesey. It lies about 2+1⁄2 miles west of the coastal town of Moelfre and ⅔ of a mile south-west of the hamlet of Brynrefail. The meaning of Bodafon is obscure. You can see the road below that you came in on to give you an idea of the height.

Beautiful location with the purple heather, rocky outcrops, and the lake. The descent towards Brynrefail is mega, you can really send it!

Great views of the east coast on the descent from Mynydd Bodafon.

Large sandy bay surrounded by dunes. On the north side there are large, striking limestone cliffs of Castell Mawr - certainly geologically interesting, looks like climbers could have fun here... The beach itself is a really large (!) sandy bay, very popular in summer but largely deserted out of season. You can sometimes see kitesurfers and windsurfers here. There is parking behind the dunes and there is a small beach café and shop.

Mynydd Bodafon is a proper minature little Switzerland in the middle of an otherwise flat Anglesey. At 178m it is the highest hill on the island and you have great views out over the rest of the island. The roads around here are also great for cycling.

A small but tough and technical climb, beware of sharp rocks on the left hand side when descending

To protect the sensitive wildlife and grazing animals within this National Nature Reserve, dogs are not permitted on the main trails and boardwalks. It's best to leave your canine friends at home when planning a visit to explore the core fen and heathland areas.
The landscape is a unique mix of habitats. Expect to walk on unsurfaced, grassy paths that can be muddy and wet, especially after rain, so waterproof footwear is essential. You'll also find a 1,000-meter boardwalk that provides excellent access over the marshy fen, allowing you to get close to the reedbeds and ponds.
Yes, the area is well-suited for families looking for an easier walk. A great option is the View of Mainland Mountains loop from Brynteg. It's a relatively short and flat 3-mile (4.9 km) walk that offers lovely scenery without being too strenuous for younger hikers.
There is a small, designated car park for the Cors Erddreiniog National Nature Reserve located off the B5110 road near Capel Coch. From here, you can directly access the main Fen and Pond Walk. Parking is limited, so arriving earlier in the day is a good idea, especially during peak season.
Cors Erddreiniog is a biodiversity hotspot. In spring and summer, the reserve is famous for its rare orchids and carnivorous sundew plants. The air is filled with butterflies, including the rare marsh fritillary, and over 20 species of dragonflies. For birdwatchers, look for reed and sedge warblers in the reedbeds, and you might even spot a hunting hen harrier in winter or an otter near the water.
The walks vary to suit different preferences. You can find short, easy strolls like the 1.2-mile Mynydd Bodafon Summit loop from Llanfihangel Tre'r Beirdd, which takes under an hour. For a longer outing, there are moderate hikes of over 8 miles that can take around 3-4 hours to complete.
Yes, many of the routes in the area are circular. For a great walk that combines varied scenery, consider the View of Mainland Mountains – Marianglas Crossroads loop from Brynteg. This 6.3-mile (10.2 km) trail takes you through the local landscape on a convenient loop, typically completed in under 3 hours.
Absolutely. For a hike that combines the fenland's character with beautiful coastal scenery, The Ship Inn – Red Wharf Bay loop from Brynteg is an excellent choice. This moderate 8.6-mile (13.9 km) route takes you out to the expansive, sandy bay and passes the well-known Ship Inn.
The area is highly regarded by the komoot community, with over 3,000 hikers having explored the trails. Reviewers often praise the unique and wild atmosphere of the fen, the excellent opportunities for birdwatching, and the tranquility of the less-trafficked paths.
Yes, you can explore the area around Llyn Cefni. The Llyn Cefni Reservoir and Dam – Afon Cefni River loop from Llangwyllog is an easy 3.7-mile (6 km) walk. It follows paths alongside the reservoir and the Afon Cefni, offering peaceful waterside views.
Spring and summer are fantastic times to visit, as the fen comes alive with wildflowers, including rare orchids, and a dazzling array of butterflies and dragonflies. The birdlife is also most active during these months. However, the trails are accessible year-round, with autumn and winter offering a more stark, quiet beauty and a chance to see different bird species like hen harriers.
