Asterousia was probably one of the most important cradles of asceticism in Crete, for hermits lived in the "sacred" gorges of Agiofarago and Martsalo, and these hermits later decided to build this monastery. The gorges still belong to the Odigitrias Monastery today. The area is also known as the Mount Athos of Crete, named after the famous monastic republic on the Athos peninsula in northern Greece. The development of such a strong monastic tradition in the area is likely due in large part to the fact that the Apostle Paul stopped in this part of the Asterousia mountain range on his journey to Rome.

It is one of the oldest monasteries in Crete. This humble monastery is considered an unmoving guardian of Orthodoxy and provides accommodation for visiting believers. Besides Agios Antonios, Agiofarago, and Panagia in Martsalos, there are a number of chapels and hermitages on the monastery grounds. The monastery's olive press and bakery now serve as a museum.

According to the Acts of the Apostles, the Apostle Paul, on his way from Caesarea to Rome, landed as a Roman prisoner in Kaloi Limenes. He then attempted to continue westward along the coast to Phoinikas ("Phoenix"), which is identified with the small village of the same name in the bay west of Loutro, or with Loutro itself. A small church was built there (first in Byzantine times, then restored in the 1960s).
