The mountain village of Chalki (also Halki, Halkio, or Chalkio) lies on the Tragea Plateau. This beautiful little village with its many old and well-renovated houses, the Barozzi Tower (Prísgó Γρατσια-Μπαρότσι), and the Panagia Protothronos (Prísgó Πρωτόθρονος) are worth a visit. The almost car-free center has restaurants, a wine bar, a bakery, and a few shops. Chalki is a popular destination for day trips and can get quite crowded during the season.

Wonderful descent on a dirt road to the east coast of Naxos

You can ride up to Bazeos-Tower and continue on until you come to the rocky road that leads to Panagia sta Spilià. When you come to the location on the map you can't really see the entrance, but it's there. Notice the road splits into multiple paths, look a little to the right behind the olive trees up against the small rocky cliff wall. It was unlocked when we went, remember to close the door on your way out. Our original plan was to backtrack to the tower and then continue our ride towards Filoti, but we changed our plans and decided to keep exploring down the gravel roads/paths and see what's up ahead. It was a very rewarding journey, but more of a mountain bike trail. We were glad we had our gravel bikes with us. For most riders, I would recommend turning around, but if you want an adventure keep going. You are likely to do a little hiking, but it's all part of the fun.

At the top of the pass in the direction of Apiranthos, nestled against the steep cliffs, there is a chapel which, like the chapel at Filoti, is dedicated to St. Irene. A wonderful place to stop and give thanks to the Almighty.
