Tips from the Community

Lenka
January 3, 2026, The Meanders of Verliga

Verlinga is one of Greece’s famous Dragon Lakes, named after local legends that say a dragon carved the lake and its winding waterways as it moved across the plateau. The lake sits at an impressive 2,050 meters (6,725 ft) above sea level on Mount Lakmos (Peristeri), right on the natural border between Epirus and Thessaly. Birthplace of a Major River, Verlinga is part of the source system of the Acheloos River, one of Greece’s longest rivers. Water disappears into natural sinkholes and re-emerges lower down as powerful mountain streams. Depending on the season, Verlinga expands into small interconnected lakes or shrinks into winding water channels. In summer, water may remain only in natural hollows, giving the landscape a surreal look. The surrounding plateau is treeless and covered with alpine meadows, bursting into color with buttercups, crocuses, and rare mountain plants in late spring and summer. The area is often snow-covered for several months, making late spring to early autumn the best time to visit. Access is by hiking from the village of Chaliki. The hike follows marked mountain paths and shepherd routes and is moderate to demanding due to altitude, weather exposure, and length. Bring a windproof jacket (weather changes fast) and plenty of water (no guaranteed drinking sources). As the mobile signal is unreliable, to ensure you have navigation when your mobile signal fails, download offline maps. Always check weather forecasts before going; fog can appear suddenly, making navigation difficult. Best Time to Visit 🌼 Late May – June • Snow is melting • Alpine flowers are in bloom • Lake is usually full and dramatic ☀️ July – Early September (Best Overall) • Most stable weather • Easier access • The lake may split into smaller pools and channels, creating unique scenery
