The Gräfenbrunnen fountain is a karst spring. It originates in the Wachsenburggraben, part of the Eichenberg-Gotha-Arnstadt-Saalfeld fault zone. In this zone, groundwater rises to the surface due to the damming effect of the clay layers found here. The spring is said to have had a very large discharge in earlier times, comparable to the Mühlberger Spring (2,000 liters per minute). In the 19th century, the spring was filled in and drained. The honorary remembrance of the early Christian and popular saint Radegunde has been maintained since her death on August 13, 587. The only place of worship in Thuringia is located in front of the Mühlburg. This chapel was probably built by the first Christian landowners, the monks of Echternach. Meinhard I, lord of the castle since 1140, had the Radegunde Chapel renovated. In the 1930s, the man-high remains of the chapel's walls were uncovered, but unfortunately demolished, so that today only the foundations are visible. On August 13, 1987, on the 1400th anniversary of Radegunde's death, a memorial stone was ceremoniously placed within the foundations to commemorate Radegunde's charitable work. Around 150 churches worldwide are dedicated to Saint Radegunde, the patron saint of weavers and potters, including in Canada and the Congo.

Mühlberg is one of around forty Radegundi locations in German-speaking countries where the work of Saint Radegunde is commemorated. She is much better known in France. Radegunde was born around 518 as the daughter of the then Thuringian King Berthachar. Her father was the victim of an assassination attempt and her mother also died very early. Radegunde and her younger brother grew up at the court of their uncle Hermenefred, who made himself the sole ruler of the Thuringian Empire.
