A small but lovely body of water, where you can relax on one of the many benches and let the tour wind down.

“Lord Jesus, our gaze is fixed on You, turned toward You – it is full of shame, repentance, and hope. (…) Always grant us the grace of holy hope! Help us, Son of Man, to free ourselves from the arrogance of the thief, the robber on Your left, and of the short-sighted and the corrupt, who saw in You an opportunity to be exploited, a loser to be ridiculed, another chance to blame others and even God for their own guilt. Instead, we ask You, Son of God, to identify us with the good thief who looked upon You with eyes full of shame, repentance, and hope; who, with the eyes of faith, saw divine victory in Your apparent defeat and thus knelt before Your mercy and grace and, with honesty and integrity, robbed Paradise. Amen!” (Prayer for the Stations of the Cross with the Holy Father, Pope Francis, Good Friday 2018)

The memorial in Bergheim, in front of the present chapel, was erected around 1938. The structure stands in front of a quarry stone wall on a flat base; five stone blocks form the actual memorial. The upper end consists of two flat sandstone slabs, topped by a steel helmet. On the lower two stone blocks is a dedication, and on the third and fourth blocks is a sword with laurel leaf garlands. On all four sides of the fifth block are an Iron Cross and a hanging laurel leaf garland. On the right and left sides are the names of the fallen soldiers of the First World War, and at the top are the words "They died a heroic death." After the Second World War, two stone name plaques were attached to the quarry stone wall behind the memorial. The plaques bear the inscription "1939 1945 Our Fallen" at the top. At the bottom left of the plaques is a bomb hitting the ground and a bomb exploding. ..."
